The Alliance for Driver Safety & Security, also known as the Trucking Alliance, is a coalition of freight and logistics companies that support more safety and security reforms than are currently required to operate as a motor carrier and that can:
-
Increase the safety and working environment of commercial truck drivers,
-
Reduce the number and severity of large truck accidents, and
-
Improve highway safety for the general public who share the road with the freight transportation industry.
The Trucking Alliance carriers have adopted operating standards as principles of membership. These core principles are:
-
Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs)– Have certified ELDs or Automatic OnBoard Recording Devices (AOBRDs) installed in all interstate trucks to verify hour-of-service compliance.
-
Truck Speed Limiters– Regulate trucks with speed limiters at a maximum speed of 65 mph.
-
Hair Testing– Recognize hair testing as an alternative to urine exams, to conform to federal commercial driver pre-employment drug testing processes.
-
Public Liability Insurance– Be sufficiently self-insured or if fully insured, maintain liability insurance with higher limits than the federal government requires.
-
Onboard Truck Safety Technologies– Actively test and install Advanced Safety Technologies, (ASTs) including, but not limited to: lane departure warning systems, forward collision mitigation systems, automatic emergency braking, roll stability controls, and other emerging ASTs that prove effective in avoiding large truck accidents.
-
Driver Hiring and Training Programs– Utilize extensive pre-employment screening processes and on-going driver training that exceed federal standards.
“The Trucking Alliance is committed to safety objectives that make sense for our country first, the trucking industry second, and our companies third. We shouldn’t tolerate 300,000 trucking accidents that kill upwards of 4,000 people each year, and 600 of those fatalities are truck drivers. We can do more as an industry to help lower risks for our truck drivers and all motorists.” — Steve Williams
